Three Cups of Tea: One man’s mission to promote peace …one school at a time
It’s an amazing story of a promise kept.
- Haji Ali.
It’s the story of former mountaineer Greg Mortenson who lost his way while on a failed attempt to climb K2 in September 1993. He stumbled into the village of Korphe, high above the River Braldu in Baltistan followed by a comet’s tail of curious children. It is there that he meets Haji Ali, the village chief, who offers him a piece of ibex jerky and a cup of butter tea.
Before he leaves Mortenson has promised to return to build a bridge across the river and a school for the children of the village. It is a promise he keeps. This book is the story of how he succeeded in keeping that promise. What we learn along the way is not just the amazing tale of one man making good on a promise but a glimpse into a region of the world that is in the cross hairs of the “war on terror” and about the people for whom this is home – their aspirations, character and courage.
Mortenson co-founded the Central Asia Institute that has so far fully or partially funded schools, teachers, women’s training centers, health centers, potable water projects as well as several other initiatives. And it all began with that meeting in that remote village.
